Notes from the Fatosphere Feed still exists!

Kelly has the scoop on what the closure of Google Reader means for the Notes from the Fatosphere Feed:

On 30th June, Google Reader will cease to exist. The Fatosphere feed has been moved to Feedly. Until the beginning of July, readers will be able to access NFTF via either Google Reader or Feedly, but from July 1st, you will need a Feedly account to continue to receive the feed.

All you need to do is go to Feedly.com, sign in with your google reader email and password, and follow the instructions to migrate your account from GR to Feedly.

If you don’t currently get the NFTF feed and want to do so, you can sign up at feedly.com for a new Feedly account. You will need either a gmail address, or a Google account for this. Then, once your account is set up, just type ‘notes from the fatosphere’ into the add content box and you’re done.

That’s why it’s no longer on the sidebar, sadly. However, you can follow along using Feedly, as suggested. You can contact the feed administrator, Ang, at fatosphere (at) gmail (dot) com

It’s really sad that feedly doesn’t let you log in with anything separate from google. I don’t have a google account, for Reasons.

    1. Michelle Avatar

Yeah, that is sad. I didn’t realize that before, because I use The Old Reader instead of feedly for my RSS needs, but it doesn’t work for the Fatosphere feed. Bummer.

This whole thing blows. I used that feed daily.

I started a Feedly account, but every time I try to access it, it says it’s over capacity and adding more servers. Sounds like they weren’t prepared for the migration from Google Reader.

    1. Michelle Avatar

I think that’s probably the case. When they first announced Google Reader was going away a few months ago, there were similar problems with other feed reading services. I bet it will clear up, though.

Has the fatosphere been just unusually quiet lately or is my Feedly broken? There have been no new posts for days…

    1. Michelle Avatar

I’m not sure. I saw some new posts yesterday or the day before, but today I’m not seeing any new ones. On Feedly, if you look up “fatosphere” there are a couple of different feeds to choose from (not sure why) so you might want to make sure you’re subscribed to the right one.

Any RSS feed can be read from any reader. If you don’t care which web browser people use, the reader they like doesn’t matter either.

    1. Michelle Avatar

Yes, this is true. However, I am not sure exactly how the Fatosphere RSS feed is set up at the moment. There may be additional factors that I’m not understanding.

My biggest problem at the moment is that I don’t actually know how to subscribe to the current feed in another reader than Feedly at all, given that it somehow relied on Google Reader in the first place to be administered. There was also something involving Yahoo! Pipes at one point. That is my very non-technical understanding. At any rate, there seems to be some reason why the loss of Google Reader matters specifically to this RSS feed, which is somewhat different from, for example, the RSS feed for this individual website. Is the fact that it is a group/aggregate/[insert term I don’t know here] RSS feed relevant?

This was the original url for the Fatosphere feed that we all used to use – http://feeds.feedburner.com/FatFuNotesFromTheFatosphere – it now no longer works at all due to Reader’s closing, if I am reading that error message correctly. Which means you cannot subscribe to it in any RSS reader using that particular address. Using Feedly, though, you can search through their service for a link to the new feed, and it shows up – however it does not appear to be updated in recent days, so I have no idea if it is functioning at all. [Turns out that Feedly is attempting to read from that same feedburner RSS, I just checked, so that would explain why it’s not updating there, either – it seems to be gone entirely. I thought from Ang’s message that they had somehow used Feedly specifically to set up a new aggregate feed, but I misread.]

If you know more about this, it would be really helpful if you could explain and help me understand. I’m kind of lost.

I am replacing a very cranky comment I originally left here with the following information:

Go ahead and try to subscribe to the old feed address in any reader. It is http://feeds.feedburner.com/FatFuNotesFromTheFatosphere

It won’t work. And no one has told me what the new feed address actually is. The closest I can figure is this one – http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=b090fa3cde6053a2c0c6a921bf1b6ce5&_render=rss which doesn’t match exactly with the results of the feed here – http://notesfromthefatosphere.blogspot.ca/

    I had a couple questions.

    1) What happens to the fat that they remove by liposuction? Sell it as Tenderflake? Store it somewhere?

    2) Does heating milk with lactase commercially added, cancel the lactase? Sometimes with sauces my stomach/digestion hurts.

It seems no one took my questions seriously. I wasn’t joking. On those tv shows, like Dr. Oz, they have “fat” that they play with. Is it even real human fat, or is it some prop? Also, what would they do with organs that they remove?

      1. Michelle Avatar

It’s a prop. And I believe the fat they take from liposuction patients is disposed as medical waste, like other tissue would be. If anyone knows anything different, I’m all ears.

    Hi all,

I’m Ang and I’ve taken over the NFTF feed from the previous admin, who had the good sense to pass it on before Google Reader went kaput and started all this mess.

Re updates since 1st July: I’m not sure what’s happening there. My feed is working fine and I’m receiving updates from all the blogs on the feed. I just did what was suggested above – open a feedly account and migrate over. I have no idea why some of you are not getting updates, but I will post something in the support forum and see what I can find out.

Re not wanting a feedly account: I can completely understand this, and the resistance to google taking over the world. What I want to do is set up a website/blog page that loads the feed, like the old NFTF by FatFu used to do. This is not as simple as it sounds (or maybe it is – if anyone has any tips, please do email me). I will have to find an app that streams feedly to something like wordpress, and I’m not sure how well developed this service is yet. I will get on that, and will let you know when there is a webpage. Then, you will be able to either visit the page directly when you want to check in with the fatosphere, or subscribe to the page using another feed reader.

If all else fails, I will create a new feed and add each of the blogs one by one, but I’d rather not do this if I don’t have to. I’m not sure what will happen to all the people who have already subscribed to the feed.

So for now, I just wanted to let you know that I’m working on it, and apologise for the inconvenience.

    Ang :)

      Ang–

Thanks for doing this work, it means a lot to many randoms on the internet. Please keep everyone updated–I also can’t see the fatosphere feed from feedly, and I also am an Old Reader user so could just use the feed address. I imagine the whole thing is complicated, so thanks again!

OK, just so you know, I just updated my feedly profile, confirmed my email, created a new password, made a name, refreshed, etc etc…and I still only have stories from July 1.

    1. Michelle Avatar

Thanks for doing that and letting us know.

Another day, another day without the Notes from the Fatosphere feed on Feedly.

It’s just become far too much work and trouble to figure this out, I wish all the writers, posters and readers the best, but I’m “shutting the whole thing down”. It’s only adding stress to my day, instead of being a positive in my life.

OK, I signed up for Bloglovin and the same, exact thing is happening…I have the “Truth is Fiction” article from July 1, and nothing since then, no matter what I do.

    I just don’t feel like it’s me.

This is a truly awful experience. I remember signing up for things, and they didn’t turn out right either. I’m not bothering about this feedly thing though, since I only ever read a few steady blogs. Occasionally something would look interesting on the feed.

I signed up for a number of blogs on feedly, and it keeps telling me there aren’t enough new posts for it to show them to me, but then when I go to the blogs there ARE new posts.

What’s up with Feedly? Mine won’t update. At all. So it keeps telling me everything is read, day after day. Argh! I miss the old feed.

    1. Michelle Avatar

I don’t know. That is weird – I haven’t tried using Feedly for anything except the Fatosphere feed, so I wasn’t aware that other feeds weren’t being updated. I use The Old Reader for all of my other RSS subscriptions because it is the most similar to Google Reader and I am a creature of habit. Frustrating.

Michelle, forgive me for submitting a comment on an entirely different post, but the comments were closed on the one I was reading: http://www.fatnutritionist.com/index.php/on-not-being-a-dietitian/.

I just wanted to say that I am completely enamored and supportive of you. I’m in school right now for an MS in nutrition (in NYC, USA); food/nutrition has been a lifelong love of mine and I’ve been the go-to gal on the subject for everyone I know for decades, but I thought I should finally pursue a proper degree in it. Your “not a dietitian” post helped validate some of the thoughts and ideas that are running around in my own head right now (mostly, “What if I don’t get the RD title and how can I do what I love without it and I’m 44 years old and what if I’m wasting my time?”).

I haven’t read through the rest of your site yet to see what’s come of you since that post (I had to stop and write my love letter to you first), but I’m hoping you’re still fighting the good fight and successfully doing exactly what you want to be doing…on your own terms.

I look forward to reading and learning more about you. All the best, my new friend!
